Blueberries

As promised, here is evidence of our blueberry picking adventure. Despite the freeze that the farm experienced a few months back, there were enough blueberries to keep the farm open to visitors like us. Together, Nate and I picked 12.5 pounds in about 3 hours or so. Needless to say, we've been eating lots of blueberries. We've frozen a good portion of them which should last us a while. I plan to make some blueberry jam when we get back from Colorado.

Between the four of us we picked at least 20 pounds, I'd guess.

Of course, we made blueberry pie.

This is a yummy blueberry coffee cake. The recipe calls for yogurt. Anything that calls for yogurt and blueberries has to be good! And it is.

THS Class of 1999

My high school held our ten year reunion a few weeks ago at the Ballpark in Arlington. It was an interesting venue, as the actual event was in the ballpark's museum, so we were surrounded by memorabilia in glass cases and old stadium souvenirs. The evening was entirely laid back with dinner, drinks, and even a dance floor. It was kind of awkward at first but turned out to be a fabulous evening of catching up with old friends.

I finally downloaded the photos. I thought I took more, but apparently I was too busy socializing and didn't end up taking very many!

Baby, it's hot outside!

A week or so ago, my friend Carey introduced me to the concept of "cold soup" so I decided to give it a whirl this past weekend. Saturday night I made some gazpacho (from the Joy of Cooking). There are a few variations, but briefly, it is a mixture of fresh tomatoes, cucumber, green bell pepper, onion, garlic, red wine vinegar, olive oil, parsley (in my case, cilantro!), salt. Chop by hand or in a food processor, chill, and serve cold. On the side I made some tuna salad- tuna, boiled eggs, celery, pickles, jalapenos, mayo, and ate in warmed tortillas. A delicious dinner on a hot night!
We had some of the leftover soup and tortillas the next night with a cold shrimp salad dish I threw together with whatever ingredients we had on hand: celery, cilantro, garlic, olive oil, garlic salt, crushed red pepper, and black pepper.

Yum. We ate well last weekend, and kept the kitchen cool in the process.

Tres Anos

Nate and I have been married for 3 years today. People like to ask at milestones like this whether or not it feels like 3 years have passed. In one sense, no. It seems like yesterday that we said our vows. In another sense, we have already been through so much together in just three years, including a hurricane, a home burglary, a new car, a job change, new jobs, graduation, a furry critter named Cheyenne, deaths and births in the extended family, a collapsed ceiling and other home repairs, cross-country travels, river tubing, sunburns, illnesses, and much more. Through all of the ups and downs and good times and bad, I am daily reminded of God's hand in our marriage-- of his steadfast love, provision, and mercy. I feel lavishly blessed to have a husband who is filled with the spirit of God, and who is upright, thoughtful, and strives to love me just as much as Christ loves the church. I hope that I can be as much of a blessing to him as he is to me.

Here we are on our wedding day: June 17, 2006.
From Wedding

From Wedding Reception

As I was browsing the photos, I was reminded of how our first dance was cut short when the music began fast-forwarding and we were forced to add a comical twist with some ultra fast footwork and a hurried finale. It was well worth the memory!

From Wedding Reception

To celebrate this year, I surprised Nate with a weekend in Galveston where we stayed at the Moody Gardens Hotel.
From 3rd Anniversary

And last night, Nate took me out to a delicious dinner at the Capital Grille. I was entirely spoiled by this outing. Our table was prepared with rose petals, "Happy Anniversary" confetti, and a card signed by the entire wait staff. We were also served free dessert and left with a printed photograph from the divine evening.
From 3rd Anniversary

And as if all that wasn't enough, Nate made a gigantic breakfast of blueberry pancakes and sausage this morning. AND, as if all THAT wasn't enough, I had a beautiful bouquet of flowers delivered to my office today. I am so spoiled!!! I love this man!

I know that the list of experiences above is only a tiny fraction of what the Lord has in store for us for the many years to come. I look forward to the continuation of this journey ahead with my best friend!

Flashback...

Remember our trip to Maine last September? (photos here)

I was thrilled to see this post come through my Google Reader, and even felt compelled to leave a comment. The photos posted here are in the very same location where we spotted the great Martha Stewart. I am kicking myself for not saying hello. The people in the picture even had the courage to take a photo of her dog! Perhaps if Nate hadn't been shushing me, I might have. But then again, if I had, I might have made a fool of myself as I was hyperventilating and barely suppressing the shriek-ish sounds that were trying to escape from my throat.

It just brings back such great memories of that trip...

Posts to come shortly: my ten year high school reunion, blueberry picking, and more.

Berries, Blue

I'm dying to get back out to the blueberry farm. This has become an annual tradition in this household. Last weekend was out because we were in San Antonio. This weekend is out because we will be in Dallas. So, June 13 it is. I can't wait to be surrounded by thousands upon thousands of fresh, ripe blueberries. But especially, to eat them. We go through these things so fast that we plan on bringing home more this year than ever before. Thankfully Nate is tall enough to reach all of the blueberries that no on else can reach... that is a blessing from the blueberry fairies. Blue lips, blueberry smoothies, blueberry pies, breads, cakes, cookies, pancakes, etc etc etc.... here we come!

Running (Holi)day!

Tomorrow is National Running Day! Put those sneakers on and go on a run around the block, neighborhood, or park. Nate and I are joining other Houstonians at Memorial Park bright and early tomorrow morning for an organized 3-mile loop run. To find an organized event in your area, check the website.
