I can't decide if there really are increasingly more tragedies as time passes, or if it's just that I am older and more aware of the existing evil in this world.

Perhaps both, but violence stemming from human nature is sadly (though not surprisingly) cyclical and repetitive. There is nothing new under the sun, and bad things will happen again, despite the importance and implementation of any precautions.
But if it's both (increasing and repetitive) then it hasn't always been like this. ???
The tension between good and evil in society has been there since God put enmity between the seed of the serpent and the seed of the woman, but the dominance of evil ebbs and flows with particular generation. The more a people turn their back on God and forget His wisdom and His ways, the more the fruit of this folly is evidenced by the prevalence of evil in the society. Sometimes the prevalence of evil and the subsequent judgments of God are recognized and lead to repentance which can stay the forces of evil for a time; sometimes it leads to further hardening of hearts and decadently wicked societies. Hallelujah: in the end, God's all-good, all-glorious kingdom will prevail!
For what it's worth to your generation: we are definitely on a down-slope. The headlines that have become so commonplace now (road rage, shooting sprees, child sex related crimes galore) were not there 30 years ago, 40 years ago. This is not to say that children were not molested, but there is no way it happened with the frequency it does now. Pornography was not as available and that is an indiputable fact.
